Founded in 1936, Alpe d'Huez is one of France's oldest purpose built ski destinations. Now the principal resort of the Grandes Rousses Massif, the resort's claims to fame include the installation of the first ever 'Poma' drag lift and the longest ski run in the world - known as the
Sarennes run, 16 kilometres in length. Alpe d'Huez is located on the Oisans region of the Alps, east of the city of Grenoble and on the edge of the Ecrins National Park. Along with the resorts of Auris-en-Oisans, Huez-en-Oisans, Oz-en-Oisans, Vaujany and Villard Reculas, Alpe d'Huez forms part of the Grandes Rousses Massif, offering 248 kilometers of downhill runs, and thanks to its high altitude, a very reliable snow record. Alp Also a popular summer retreat, Alpe d'Huez welcomes mountain bikers and hikers; it also famously hosts one of the most challenging stages of the
Tour de France cycle race.
