One of the newest purpose built resorts in the French Alps, La Tania, which is located a short distance from Meribel, was created as a base for journalists and atheletes competing in the 1992 Albertville Winter Olympics. Designed by award winning architect Jacques Labro, one of the minds behind the creation of famed Portes du Soleil resort Avoriaz, La Tania is now a popular ski destination in its own right. La Tania the resort takes its name from the original settlement La Tagna, meaning 'bears dwelling' - in reference to the bears that inhabited the Tarentaise forest until the early 1930s. The spelling was changed in order that foreign visitors would pronounce it correctly! Today, the sympathethetically designed resort entertains a variety of international visitors, who come to enjoy its tranquil surroundings, car free enviroment and links to the extensive Three Valleys ski area.
