Les Contamines Ski Resort Guide |
|
| |
A relatively undiscovered ski destination, Les Contamines has a number of advantages over its larger and more commercialised neighbours - these being its quiet, relaxed atmosphere and lack of lift queues, even during peak periods. The village of Les Contamines is small and relatively unspoilt, characterised by traditional Savoyard farmhouses and dominated by an exquisite Baroque church (above). This resort is ideal for families, first time skiers, short breaks and holiday makers looking to 'get away from it all'. Those in search of wild parties should probably head elsewhere however, as Les Contamines nightlife is somewhat limited in its scope. Les Contamines is linked to the Evasion Mont Blanc Ski area, which offers a wide variety of terrain for all levels, not to mention picture perfect views of the Mont Blanc Massif.

The pampered residents of St Gervais have been lucky enough to take advantage of their own spa facilities for approximately the last two hundred years. In fact, visitors come from far and wide to 'partake in the waters', whose unique mineral properties are believed to have curative effects on respitory diseases and rheumatism. Packed with enough trace elements to read like the periodic table (sulfates, sodium chloride, potassium, lithium, manganese, iron, zinc and barium), the magical waters of Mont Blanc are also used to treat skin complaints and enhance the complexion. |

The Evasion Mont Blanc ski area covers the resorts of Megeve, St Gervais, Les Contamines, Combloux, Le Giettaz and St Nicolas de Veroce. The domaine encorporates 445km of marked pistes, 107 lifts, plus a snowpark and half pipe at Mont Joux. Alp Line's ultimate recommended highlight of Evasion Mont Blanc ski area is the bakery situated directly opposite the main telepherique ten minutes from the centre of St Gervais. The almond covered pain au chocolate comes highly recommended - Alp Line General Manager Ian Welsh states: 'best cakes south of Courmayeur.' |

One of France's all time classic winter retreats, Megeve has been attracting a well heeled, fat walleted clientele since the early 1900s. Designed to rival to Switzerland's swish Saint Moritz, this attractive town is frequently considered to be the original purpose-built French ski resort - at heart, rustic, romantic and atmospheric. Today Megeve still attracts a fair spinkling of fur wearing, red lipstick sporting glitterati, but is thankfully also welcoming to us thinner walleted, fatter waisted, normal people. Entertainment off piste is lively and varied, with a good mixture of bars and restaurants, three of which have been awarded Michelin stars. |

Originally an old spa town, St Gervais displays an entirely different character from exclusive sister resort Megeve and rural Les Contamines. Elegant Victorian style buildings line narrow streets and pretty squares, their unique architectural features contributing to an appealing and atmospheric centre full of character. Along with obvious visual appeal and access to the slopes, St Gervais offers a variety of other activities, most notably its famed thermal springs, where non-skiers can pass the day indulging themselves in any number of sumptuous spa treatments. |
