Located in the Allues Valley in the heart of the Three Valleys ski area, the resort of Meribel is one of Europe's most desirable ski destinations. Consisting almost entirely of traditional Savoyard chalet style architecture, the resort, which was conceived and commissioned by a Scot named Colonel Peter Lindsay, is one of the most sympathetic and convivial purpose built ski villages in the Alps. Meribel itself is split into three seperate areas, the first and lowest being Meribel Village, a tranquil hamlet visited mainly by young families. Located roughly two kilometres up from here, is Meribel or 'Meribel Centre', the largest and livliest development by far, with buzzing apres ski and an abundance of ski-in ski-out accommodation. The final development, Meribel-Mottaret, dates from the 1970s, so doesn't inspire quite the same level of devotion as Meribel Centre, but still offers a good selection of bars, shops and restaurants, plus excellent access to the slopes.
